01 / WHAT CHANGED
The rupee cost of crude
moved higher.
Between 3 Sept 2026 and 10 Sept 2026, the indicative comparison across two Brent spot feeds rose 21.57%. Delhi IOC petrol and diesel quotes were unchanged over those same dates.

From a barrel to the pump.
Two measured inputs. A calculation.
Then a system with more moving parts.
One benchmark, priced in dollars.
Brent spot is a reference for international crude prices. It is not India’s actual purchase basket: grades, contracts, freight and timing can change the price paid.

The comparison uses the latest date present in both datasets, and the latest common date at least seven calendar days earlier. It never substitutes a nearby date. Brent spot is an international reference, not the Indian basket or an actual import invoice. ECB reference cross-rates are indicative, not transaction rates.
The change is split into oil and currency contributions by averaging the two calculation orders. This shares the interaction equally, so the contributions add to the total before rounding. It is an arithmetic decomposition, not evidence that either factor caused a market or retail-price change.
Scenario links save inputs and their observed baseline date. Baselines outside the displayed 90-day record are reported as unavailable. The ₹50–₹140 dollar and $20–$200 Brent controls set the supported scenario range; they are not predictions.
Figures may differ by ₹0.01 when rounded. A comparison is marked older when its latest matching observation is more than seven calendar days old.
Why crude costs and pump prices differReading +
Taxes and dealer commission are components in official retail price build-ups. State tax rules vary, and oil marketing companies take retail pricing decisions. Processing crude also produces several products, so a litre of crude is not a litre of petrol.
