Why it matters
Furnace oil is the heavy residual product at the bottom of the refinery barrel. It serves as marine bunker fuel and as industrial boiler fuel in older plants. Demand is structurally declining as gas substitutes for industrial heat and as IMO 2020 VLSFO regulations changed shipping bunker specs. Indian OMCs produce more furnace oil than the domestic market absorbs; export parity pricing applies.
